Public Space: Prototyping and Pro-active Design
Architects and designers of the built environment are primarily service providers. This means that we mostly wait for the phone to ring with a client’s preconceived project agenda. Public Architecture works outside of this model by acting as both problem-solver and problem-identifier. In many of these cases no conventional client exists. Additionally, the design process of public spaces has historically involved only a handful of participants. The needs of most of the users are simply imagined by designers. Through the use of prototyping methods (nearly unheard of in land use development) new ways of actively engaging the user’s experience and needs become possible.
